Ellenborough Park is one of the most beautiful wedding venues in the Cotswolds — a Regency manor house set in ten acres of grounds just outside Cheltenham. The pace is relaxed and the light is stunning – it’s a beautiful place to tie the knot. I’ve photographed weddings here that have ranged from intimate ceremonies in the orangery to full summer celebrations spilling out across the lawns. There’s something about Ellenborough Park that makes the photography almost easy. The venue has been designed to allow your timeline to flow from one element to another. There are several different spaces including indoor and outdoor bars, a beautiful Stone Gazebo, a spa and rooms such as the the Old Chapel, the De La Bere Suite, The Elizabethan and the Royalist – each hosting a varying number of guests.

The light inside the orangery is perfect for ceremonies. The lawns wrap the house on multiple sides, which means portraits in different directions at different times of the day. In the early evening, the golden hour here is genuinely gorgeous.

What couples should know about getting married at Ellenborough Park

The ceremony spaces at Ellenborough Park offer real flexibility. The orangery is the most popular choice for indoor ceremonies — it’s light-filled, elegant, and intimate without feeling small. For warmer months with good weather, outdoor ceremonies on the terrace or within the walled garden are also possible.

From a photography perspective, the main house faces south-west, which means afternoon and evening light falls beautifully across the front façade and gardens. If your reception runs into the early evening, the golden hour here is one of the best. I’d always recommend being prepared to skip out for portraits at some point if the light is night before sunset.  – we won’t need long and the photos will be incredible!

Ellenborough Park is a great venue for unreliable British weather. There are covered areas and indoor spaces that feel just as special as the gardens, so even if the day turns grey, the photography doesn’t suffer. The interior rooms — the bar, the corridors, the dining area— all photograph beautifully – meaning no weather-stress for you.

One of my favourite things about photographing weddings in Cheltenham is the architecture. Those beautiful white Regency terraces and ironwork balconies make just gorgeous backdrops — especially in the golden light of early evening. I love to shoot wide open at golden hour, using sunflare and the natural dappled light through Cheltenham’s beautiful avenues of mature trees to create gorgeous bokeh behind my subjects.

My favourite way to capture your group photographs is to set up my tripod with my camera and an 85mm lens, using a shallow depth of field to create beautiful separation between my subjects and a stunning Cheltenham backdrop. This makes your wedding guests really pop, and makes these photographs so beautiful. Using a tripod keeps my compositions consistent, giving them that extra wow-factor in your wedding album. Where needed, I’ll use off-camera flash to give my subjects a little extra pop.

It’s always such a joy when I’m asked to be someone’s Clearwell Castle wedding photographer. This venue is absolutely stunning and an awesome place to get married — a Grade II listed, 18th-century castellated mansion, hidden away in the heart of the Forest of Dean. I’ve photographed weddings here across the seasons, from crisp spring days filled with confetti and golden light to cosy autumn evenings where the castle just glows. Why Clearwell Castle is perfect for relaxed, natural wedding photography

I absolutely love the vibe at Clearwell Castle, it’s spectacular but welcoming, historic but beautifully modernised for weddings. The spaces are light, airy and there are large, beautiful grounds for guests to wonder and enjoy. All this makes it a wonderful location for really beautiful, natural photography. 

Couples who choose Clearwell tend to be people who want their day to feel genuine, relaxed and fun. They’re not chasing perfection; they want real moments, real laughter, and photos that actually look like them.

That suits me down to the ground. 

My approach is documentary — I won’t be arranging you into poses or directing you every five minutes. I’m just present, observing, and capturing what’s genuinely unfolding on your wedding day. 

And Clearwell is a fabulous backdrop for all that. The Gothic architecture and stone exterior create incredible natural framing opportunities wherever you turn. The leaded glass windows and lancet windows flood the interior spaces with this gorgeous light. And then there are the grounds — twenty acres of gardens, striped lawns, the croquet lawn, the cocktail terrace — all of which offer a completely different feel depending on the season and the time of day.

Couples who get married here in the Forest of Dean tend to be countryside lovers — they want the feeling of being tucked away in the Wye Valley countryside, somewhere genuinely special. And that sense of occasion comes through in the photos without you having to do anything at all. Clearwell Castle does a lot of the heavy lifting.

What couples should know about getting married at Clearwell Castle

If you’re in the early stages of planning, here are a few things worth knowing from a photographer’s perspective.

The Ballroom is the heart of most Clearwell weddings, and it’s genuinely spectacular to shoot in. That 75-foot aisle is one of the most dramatic in any venue I’ve worked at. The lancet windows and leaded glass let in beautiful natural light all day, so even if it’s overcast outside, the quality of light in there is stunning, and makes for incredibly flattering photos.

For outdoor ceremonies, the Bandstand in the manicured gardens is a gorgeous option — you get the castle as your backdrop, which is pretty hard to beat. 

The cocktail terrace and drinks terrace are also brilliant for those in-between moments during the drinks reception — guests naturally spread out across the croquet lawn and the gardens, which makes for really relaxed, candid photography. Lots of couples choose to put our lawn games, which guests always love.

Inside, there’s so much variety. The Great Hall is where a lot of couples do their cake cut and first dance, and the light in there in the evening — once the candles and interior lighting come on — is really beautiful. The Cellar Bar is an awesome place to end your day, with its disco-lit dancefloor. And then there are quieter spaces like the Library, the Drawing Room, and the Quiet Room, which are perfect for stolen moments and family portraits away from the crowd.

For your portraits, the castle grounds give you loads of options depending on the time of year. The stone exterior and castle facade work brilliantly in the afternoon and early evening when the light wraps around the building. I’d also always recommend saving a bit of time for evening portraits — the castle at sunset, with the interior light beginning to glow through those leaded windows, is honestly something else.

One thing I always mention to Clearwell couples: don’t panic about the weather. Yes, a sunny spring day in the Forest of Dean is stunning, but Clearwell holds its own in any conditions. The covered spaces, the beautiful interior rooms, and the character of the building mean that overcast or even rainy days often produce some of my favourite images. There’s always a plan B, and plan B is a great option at Clearwell Castle.

And if you’re planning a confetti moment, the castle staircase and the long approach to the entrance is one of those Clearwell things that’s genuinely iconic. Paper confetti is the way to go. It drifts and flutters beautifully and photographs in a way that biodegradable petal confetti just can’t match.

My style blends both: mostly hands-off storytelling with a few well-timed, relaxed portrait moments.

When’s the best time for portraits at Clearwell Castle?

If the light is cooperating, that window between the ceremony and the wedding breakfast works really well — the afternoon light on the castle exterior and across the manicured gardens is gorgeous. But I’d also strongly recommend building in a bit of time in the early evening for a second portrait moment out in the grounds.

The light gets that warm, golden quality, the formal part of the day has settled, you’ve had a drink and a meal, and you’re much more relaxed.

Those portraits on the lawns with the castle behind you tend to be the ones couples fall in love with.

And if you can squeeze in a night portrait outside the castle before the evening wraps up — do it. The lit-up stone exterior against the dark Forest of Dean sky is stunning.

Yes! I work at Painswick Hotel and lots of other nearby venues, I am based in Herefordshire, so frequently photograph weddings all over Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds

What style works best?
My style is mostly documentary and informal, I’m keen for my clients to have the most relaxed and enjoyable wedding dayas possible! Of course, Painswick is a beautiful Cotswolds Village and a stunning place for photographs, so we will slip away for short bursts once or twice during the day, to capture the two of you in the beautiful surrounding scenery.

When is the best time for portraits?

When Chelsea, the wedding coordinator, calls guests in to be seated for the meal, this is a great time for us to sneak off for a few portraits, while guests get settled and use the bathroom. You’ll then be announced in before the meal begins. Hopefully, there will be nice light at Golden Hour, and we can sneak off for some more pictures here, too.

Treadam Barn Photography – Documentary, with a gentle nudge

If you’re planning a wedding at Treadam Barn and looking for a photographer who will capture it naturally and unobtrusively, you’re in exactly the right place.

Treadam Barn is beautifully restored, surrounded by stunning Monmouthshire countryside, and unusually (for a barn wedding venue) has lots of natural light. 

My approach is documentary-led, relaxed and designed to allow you to enjoy your day. Your wedding will not be a photoshoot. Instead, I work in the background, letting the day unfold naturally.

A Beautiful Barn Venue in Monmouthshire

Treadam Barn is beautifully hidden in the Monmouthshire countryside, a short drive from Abergavenny, and not far from the striking Skirrid and Sugar Loaf mountains. It’s a beautiful barn, with an interesting history that the owner is sure to tell you all about! It’s unusual in that there are big windows and, therefore, tons of natural light, making it very rare for a barn wedding venue. 

Everything is on one site, which makes it super easy for couples – no rushing between venues or complicated logistics. Couples and their guests can enjoy a relaxed, happy day, and there is even a pool on site if the weather’s hot!

For photography, a relaxed setup means more authentic interactions, more time for fun, and more of those small in-between moments that are so much more meaningful than anything staged.

Ceremony options at Treadam Barn

The main barn is actually beautiful for your ceremony, because it is flooded with light and a dream for a photographer who tries to avoid using flash when possible. The stone walls and wooden beams are truly beautiful, and the barn really needs little decorating.

You can also plan an outdoor ceremony in the courtyard or surrounding grounds (weather permitting). The scenery is beautiful, especially in the summer.

There’s a private lake, lawns, terraced steps, trees and thoughtful seasonal planting that changes throughout the year. In spring and summer, everything feels lush and romantic. As a documentary wedding photographer, what I love most about Clevedon Hall is the way the day can just flow. There’s space for guests to spread out, lots of natural light, and plenty of quiet corners for natural, unposed moments to unfold.

With so many different spaces and rooms, there is a huge variety at Clevedon Hall. If it rains, there are so many wonderful backdrops just inside the house, and if the weather is fine, we really are spoilt for choice!

The History behind Clevedon Hall

Clevedon Hall was built between 1850–1852 for Conrad William Finzel, a wealthy Bristol sugar merchant. Originally called Frankfort Hall, the house was designed in a Jacobean Revival style by architects Foster and Wood. 

The estate is Grade II listed, and several features within the grounds — including the boundary walls, lodge and fountain — are also listed. Over the years, the house has had many different lives.

From 1945 until 1991 it was home to St Brandon’s Girls’ School, then, it was used as office space before undergoing a significant restoration in 2010 to become the luxury wedding venue it is today.

Sitting high above the Avon Gorge, Clifton Observatory is one of Bristol’s most iconic wedding locations. It has epic views across the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the city skyline, making it feel iconic Bristol.

Clifton Observatory Ceremony & Celebration Spaces

Clifton Observatory is licensed for civil ceremonies, with a couple of options depending on your guest numbers. The William West Room is the main indoor ceremony space, seating around 60 guests.

For outdoor ceremonies, the Observatory Tower can host very small ceremonies with panoramic views.

For couples wanting something truly unique, there’s also the option of using the Giant’s Cave viewing platform for a dramatic, cliffside moment.

It’s worth chatting through capacities and logistics with the venue team, especially if you’re planning something a little unconventional.

Drinks Reception and Photos

The rooftop terrace has 360° views across Bristol, and is ideal for post-ceremony drinks and relaxed mingling. On a nice day, it’s hard to beat.

The William West Room can be used for a seated meal or evening reception, with space for dining, speeches and dancing depending on your numbers.

There’s a licensed bar at the observatory. As always, it’s worth checking what’s included in your package — furniture, glassware, staffing and AV equipment — so you can budget clearly from the start.

Group photos can be taken outside with the suspension bridge behind, as can your newlywed portraits.  There are epic views of the gorge, woodland and nature, and if you’re after a more urban feel, we can pop into Clifton Village for some photos within Clifton’s beautiful city streets.

Practicalities of getting married at Clifton Observatory

There are a few practicalities to consider when booking Clifton Observatory. There’s no on-site parking, so guests will need to use buses or taxis, which are frequent from all over Bristol. Some areas, including the rooftop and cave, have steps and may not be fully accessible, so it’s worth considering what accessibility needs your guests might have.

Weather is another consideration if you’re planning to use the terrace — always have a backup plan in place. The events team are experienced and can guide you through timings, layout options and any local restrictions, including noise levels in the evening.

They’ll provide a tailored quote based on the spaces you’d like to use, your guest numbers and the time of year. Do you photograph lots of weddings here?

Yes! Although I’m based in Herefordshire, I used to live in Bristol and still work there all the time. I also shoot lots of micro-weddings, and the Observatory is a popular choice for those!

What should we think about when it comes to photos at the Observatory?
The main thing is the weather and the tourists! It’s a fairly exposed venue, so worth having some bad-weather contingency plans for photos. 

There are always lots of tourists (and locals!) up at the Observatory, so we might need to wait a little for the best spots for your portraits, but that’s ok! It works fine and is worth the effort because those views are incredible!

When is the best time for portraits?

Clifton Observatory gets a wonderful golden hour, and sometimes couples getting married elsewhere in Bristol choose to slip off to the Observatory for iconic Bristol wedding photos at this time. Golden hour is the hour before sunset, and this changes with the seasons.

As a Malvern wedding photographer, I love capturing weddings that are informal, relaxed and full of personality. Malvern is a beautiful place to get married — a historic spa town in Worcestershire, nestled at the foot of the Malvern Hills and known for its stunning architecture and beautiful hills. The History of Malvern, a Worcestershire Town

Malvern’s history is closely linked to its rise as a Victorian spa town in Worcestershire. During the 19th century, visitors flocked to Malvern to “take the waters,” (the natural spring water that flows from the Malvern Hills). The beautiful architecture present today (grand hotels and refined villas) is a stark reminder of that prosperous period, when Malvern became a fashionable retreat known for health, wellbeing and fresh air.

Great Malvern Priory sits in the heart of the town, with origins stretching back to the 11th century, anchoring Malvern’s much older monastic past. The Winter Gardens and Malvern Theatres are a nod to the town’s longstanding cultural tradition, while the hillside setting gives the streets a beautiful sense of being held by nature (and are a wonderful place to walk too!).

Set within Monmouthshire, the Wye Valley is well positioned for guests travelling from South Wales, the Midlands or the South West. With easy access from Chepstow and across into Gloucestershire, it feels tucked away but still practical.

Guests can explore Tintern Abbey, walk sections of Offa’s Dyke, canoe along the River Wye, or take in panoramic views at Symonds Yat before gathering back together to celebrate. Yes! I live in South Herefordshire, so I’m always in the Wye Valley, usually either hiking or working! I absolutely love nature, so I’m a good fit for couples who choose to get married in this stunning AONB.

What style works best?
My style is mostly documentary and informal, I’m keen for my clients to have the most relaxed and enjoyable wedding dayas possible! Lots of couples who want to get married in the Wye Valley are keen for a smaller, more intimate wedding and booking a photographer with experience in capturing micro-weddings works well.

When is the best time for portraits?
The best time for portraits is golden hour, which is the hour before sunset or the hour after sunrise. Being a valley, the light can take longer to hit certain spots within the Wye Valley itself, but I can advise on some good spots which will capture the natural light at these crucial times.
