The Forge Wedding

Colston Yard, Bristol

I was absolutely thrilled when Sophie and James asked me to be their The Forge, Bristol wedding photographer. I had been aware of this cool venue for quite a while, and knew that it’s industrial look, with large windows and lots of natural light was going to be a cool space to get creative with light.

The couple got married at Bristol register office a few days before their wedding celebration at the Forge. They wanted an informal wedding celebration, with all the fun and minimal fuss. They wanted wedding photographs to match this informal style, and so my portfolio really sang to what they were searching for.

The Clients Said…

We were after candid photos of us and our guests, and Becky absolutely nailed it. We received our photos yesterday and I feel like I haven’t stopped looking at them since, they are so good!

Becky was absolutely amazing from start to finish. We had a quick chat over the phone at first, and I could immediately tell that Becky really understood what we were after and how low-key our event was.

She was extremely organised, and provided really good, clear communication throughout.

It was so nice to meet Becky on the day. She is so lovely and chill, and knows exactly how to work with couples who are a bit camera shy.

Thank you so much Becky! 🙂!”

The Wedding Story

When I arrived with the bride and groom, they were patiently waiting for their wedding guests. The Forge staff were busy lighting candles and pouring reception drinks. I took some wide-angle venue shots before family and friends started to arrive.

It wasn’t long before the mother of the groom and the mother of the bride arrived, with greetings and congratulations for the newly-weds. Shortly after, groups of friends and other family members arrived, excitedly hugging and kissing the couple.

Reception drinks were served, and I got to work capturing all the happenings candidly. I tend to use two camera bodies with two different lenses so that I can capture individuals on my 85mm lens and groups of people together on my 35mm or 24mm, depending on how much space is available.

My style is mostly a documentary approach, but I also take some more formal family photographs and some portraits of my clients, if that’s something they’d like.

After an hour or so of drinks and excited chatter, the bride, groom and I popped outside to Colston Yard for a handful of portraits in the cobbled street. Colston Yard can only be described as stylish and industrial and is a super cool place for photos.

Shortly afterwards, the Forge staff summoned guests to be seated for their meal and a three-course wedding breakfast was served. At this point I took my leave and headed for home, after a quick hug for Sophie and James.

About The Wedding Venue

Just a stone’s throw from the Bristol Royal Infirmary, and Bristol Harbour, Colston Yard sits amongst the Bristol Arts Quarter. The Forge is an intimate, unique and creative event space which can be hired for events and workshops.

Originally a coach house, the Forge is an industrial space built in the mid-1800s. In 2015 it was bought and renovated by a photographer and musician who converted the building from a Forge to an art space. It’s large industrial-style windows have stunning views over the old Bristol city centre, with a view of St John’s Gate and the Old City wall.

Whilst the venue isn’t legal licensed for wedding ceremonies, unofficial marriage ceremonies are frequently conducted by celebrants at the venue. The venue hosts up to 70 standing guests and can seat 40 people.

The Christmas Steps and Colston Street are both awesome nearby backdrops for photographs. With Festoon lights and quirky independent shop fronts providing a real urban setting for some great shots.

I absolutely love photographing this wedding celebration at the Forge. Its beautiful windows let in lots of light, which I mostly used to side-light my subjects. The exposed red brick walls absorb rather than reflect light, which really makes your subject stand out from the background and is incredibly flattering. The bar is uber cool with minimal, but well thought out styling to create a truly unique backdrop for a wedding or event.

Intimate Bristol Micro-Weddings

I absolutely love photographing small, intimate micro-weddings in Bristol and surrounding areas.

There’s something really beautiful about simple, low-key weddings that seem to be bursting with feeling and emotion and focused on what’s really important, rather than all the fuss of a traditional wedding.

My style lends itself to smaller weddings, I have a warm, friendly personality which means I put guests at ease quickly, enabling me to capture beautifully real moments during your reception and drinks reception.
