Relaxed How Caple Court Wedding Photographer in Herefordshire

If you’re looking for a How Caple Court wedding photographer who captures your day in a relaxed, natural way, this beautiful Herefordshire venue is a one of a kind. My approach is informal and documentary-led, focusing on real moments as they unfold rather than staged poses.

How Caple Court’s historic country house and abundant gardens are an incredible place to have your Herefordshire wedding photos.  I work quietly in the background so you can stay present with your guests, stepping in gently when needed to create relaxed portraits that still feel like you.

The result is a collection of images that reflect not just how your wedding looked, but how it felt to be there.

A Real Wedding at How Caple Court

A Rainy Morning in Hoarwithy

I absolutely loved photographing Will and Rebecca’s wedding at How Caple Court. Their day started in the little village of Hoarwithy, where Rebecca got ready at home surrounded by her bridesmaids and family. It was one of those properly rainy mornings where the weather had its own plans, so her idea of walking to the church quickly turned into a lift instead. Hoarwithy church is beautiful, but reached by a long stretch of steep steps, and in the rain, they definitely became part of the adventure!  One guest even took a gentle tumble on the way up (thankfully unharmed), which brought a lot of laughter and instantly set a relaxed, joyful atmosphere for the day.

Confetti, Dogs and the Journey to How Caple Court

The ceremony itself was led by a wonderfully warm vicar who made everyone feel welcome and created such a calm, personal vibe. When Will and Rebecca walked back down the church steps as newlyweds, their guests formed a confetti tunnel in the rain. It was chaotic — umbrellas everywhere, slippery stone underfoot, and a lot of laughter!

Afterwards, their gorgeous ginger cocker spaniel, Rum, joined us outside the church for photos. She looked uncannily like my own dog, Ted, so it was extra cute to capture her! We captured a few relaxed portraits with their vintage Land Rover wedding car before heading along the windy Herefordshire lanes to How Caple Court.

Hilariously, a farmer decided at that moment to move some stock, and so there ended up being a large traffic jam of wedding guests, and we all arrived in one big convoy at the venue!

Celebrations at How Caple Court Wedding Venue

How Caple Court is a truly amazing wedding venue for a Herefordshire wedding photographer. The gardens and historic buildings offer so many beautiful backdrops, a real treat for a photographer who loves nature as much as me! During the drinks reception, we took family group photos and wandered through the gardens for portraits, making the most of a gap in the weather. Peacocks roam freely around the grounds, which adds such a quirky charm to the place (though it does mean you need to watch your step, especially when wearing a white dress!). The speeches were informal and heartfelt in the panelled Convert Barn, and the couple cut a Colin the Caterpillar cake before guests settled in for dinner. As evening guests arrived, the atmosphere shifted into celebration mode, and the dance floor quickly filled — an awesome end to a truly amazing day!

How Caple Court: A Herefordshire Country House Wedding Venue

How Caple Court is a historic country house wedding venue set in 11 acres of Edwardian gardens near the River Wye, with sweeping views towards the Welsh mountains. The estate is more than 800 years old and has truly the most amazing garden! The formal Edwardian gardens are tiered, with the manor house behind, and honestly, it was the most beautiful space for photos. Owned and cared for by The Lees family, How Caple Court is a Herefordshire wedding venue to wow your guests, and also perfect for hosting relaxed, informal celebrations.

Couples can choose from several ceremony options, including the adjacent 13th-century church, with its Gregory Chapel, or a licensed civil ceremony within the venue itself. Outdoor ceremonies can take place beneath the pretty garden gazebo, while the panelled Concert Barn and beautiful barn spaces are available for your wedding reception. There is a large marquee which sits next to the Concert Hall, which is light-filled and the perfect space to have your wedding breakfast. Located near the village of Crossway, How Caple Court offers a peaceful countryside setting that feels tucked away and exclusive. I absolutely love this Herefordshire venue.

The Historic Story Behind How Caple Court

How Caple Court carries more than 800 years of fascinating history, with Doomsday records dating back to 1089 and back to Norman times. The estate feels steeped in quiet heritage, where layers of history sit quietly amongst its Edwardian gardens and country house setting.

The 13th century church of St. Andrew and St. Mary forms part of this story. Built on earlier Norman foundations, the church remains an active parish space today. Beautiful stained glass fills the interior with stunning Herefordshire light, alongside a traditional Norman font and a carefully restored 16th-century German diptych.

Tips from a How Caple Court Wedding Photographer

You’re actually totally spoilt for choice when it comes to photo locations at How Caple Court. There are ancient barn doors, beautiful driveways and not to mention the tiered Edwardian gardens, set in the stunning Herefordshire countryside. The main thing to plan for is a little extra time to wander the grounds, as there’s so much to explore. It works well for couples who’d like a bit of quiet, alone time on their wedding day. I’ve found guests actually really enjoyed some space to take a wander, away from the wedding day craziness — and the resident peacocks provide great entertainment too!

The marquee is bright, airy and a lovely space for speeches, because everyone is evenly lit, making it the dream space to photograph all those guest reactions – happy tears, laughter and even an eye-roll from your mother-in-law! If you’re hoping for group photos in the tiered gardens, it can be helpful to plan your drinks reception there so guests are already gathered in the right place. Or, as Will and Rebekah did, we can all walk over there together so that there’s no back and forth – I’m always super keen for your formal photos to be as quick and easy as possible, so you can relax and enjoy your day.

Even on a rainy day, How Caple Court offers plenty of sheltered spots for photos. I usually suggest leaving a little extra breathing room in your drinks reception timeline, which gives flexibility to step outside if there’s a break in the rain, and that’s exactly what happened for Will and Rebekah. A lovely bridesmaid was willing to come and help Rebekah with her amazing dress, as we were keen to keep it clean on the wet ground!

There are several lovely options for your ceremony. You could choose a traditional church service nearby, before travelling to the venue. Another option is to use the adjacent 13th-century church onsite, opt for a beautiful garden ceremony surrounded by nature, or hold an indoor civil ceremony in the Concert Hall.
