Stunning Wedding Photography at Clearwell Castle
It’s always such a joy when I’m asked to be someone’s Clearwell Castle wedding photographer. This venue is absolutely stunning and an awesome place to get married — a Grade II listed, 18th-century castellated mansion, hidden away in the heart of the Forest of Dean. I’ve photographed weddings here across the seasons, from crisp spring days filled with confetti and golden light to cosy autumn evenings where the castle just glows. This page shares a real Clearwell Castle wedding alongside a bit about how I approach photographing this incredible venue.
Why Clearwell Castle is perfect for relaxed, natural wedding photography
I absolutely love the vibe at Clearwell Castle, it’s spectacular but welcoming, historic but beautifully modernised for weddings. The spaces are light, airy and there are large, beautiful grounds for guests to wonder and enjoy. All this makes it a wonderful location for really beautiful, natural photography.
Couples who choose Clearwell tend to be people who want their day to feel genuine, relaxed and fun. They’re not chasing perfection; they want real moments, real laughter, and photos that actually look like them.
That suits me down to the ground.
My approach is documentary — I won’t be arranging you into poses or directing you every five minutes. I’m just present, observing, and capturing what’s genuinely unfolding on your wedding day.
And Clearwell is a fabulous backdrop for all that. The Gothic architecture and stone exterior create incredible natural framing opportunities wherever you turn. The leaded glass windows and lancet windows flood the interior spaces with this gorgeous light. And then there are the grounds — twenty acres of gardens, striped lawns, the croquet lawn, the cocktail terrace — all of which offer a completely different feel depending on the season and the time of day.
Couples who get married here in the Forest of Dean tend to be countryside lovers — they want the feeling of being tucked away in the Wye Valley countryside, somewhere genuinely special. And that sense of occasion comes through in the photos without you having to do anything at all. Clearwell Castle does a lot of the heavy lifting.
Ceremony options at Clearwell Castle
Couples are spoilt for choice at Clearwell because both ceremony options are incredible!
Choose to get married in the ballroom, with its 75-foot-long aisle, raised dais, high ceiling, and leaded lancet windows.
Outside the Bandstand provides the perfect fairy-tale Castle setting, with views of the Castle itself behind.
What couples should know about getting married at Clearwell Castle
If you’re in the early stages of planning, here are a few things worth knowing from a photographer’s perspective.
The Ballroom is the heart of most Clearwell weddings, and it’s genuinely spectacular to shoot in. That 75-foot aisle is one of the most dramatic in any venue I’ve worked at. The lancet windows and leaded glass let in beautiful natural light all day, so even if it’s overcast outside, the quality of light in there is stunning, and makes for incredibly flattering photos.
For outdoor ceremonies, the Bandstand in the manicured gardens is a gorgeous option — you get the castle as your backdrop, which is pretty hard to beat.
The cocktail terrace and drinks terrace are also brilliant for those in-between moments during the drinks reception — guests naturally spread out across the croquet lawn and the gardens, which makes for really relaxed, candid photography. Lots of couples choose to put our lawn games, which guests always love.
Inside, there’s so much variety. The Great Hall is where a lot of couples do their cake cut and first dance, and the light in there in the evening — once the candles and interior lighting come on — is really beautiful. The Cellar Bar is an awesome place to end your day, with its disco-lit dancefloor. And then there are quieter spaces like the Library, the Drawing Room, and the Quiet Room, which are perfect for stolen moments and family portraits away from the crowd.
For your portraits, the castle grounds give you loads of options depending on the time of year. The stone exterior and castle facade work brilliantly in the afternoon and early evening when the light wraps around the building. I’d also always recommend saving a bit of time for evening portraits — the castle at sunset, with the interior light beginning to glow through those leaded windows, is honestly something else.
One thing I always mention to Clearwell couples: don’t panic about the weather. Yes, a sunny spring day in the Forest of Dean is stunning, but Clearwell holds its own in any conditions. The covered spaces, the beautiful interior rooms, and the character of the building mean that overcast or even rainy days often produce some of my favourite images. There’s always a plan B, and plan B is a great option at Clearwell Castle.
And if you’re planning a confetti moment, the castle staircase and the long approach to the entrance is one of those Clearwell things that’s genuinely iconic. Paper confetti is the way to go. It drifts and flutters beautifully and photographs in a way that biodegradable petal confetti just can’t match.

A relaxed spring wedding at Clearwell Castle — Joe & Becca
Joe and Becca got married at Clearwell Castle in early April, and the day could not have been better. Clear blue skies, a morning chill in the air, and that gorgeous low spring light bouncing off the stone exterior as I pulled up to the castle. One of those moments where you just know it’s going to be a good day.
I found Becca up in the bridal suite with her bridesmaids, and there was a lovely detail I hadn’t seen before: Becca had two sets of bridesmaids. Her main bridesmaids were in yellow, and then there was her “Something Blue” crew — a second group of friends all in blue, a nod to the something blue tradition.
The bridal suite had this brilliant, warm energy with people fussing and laughing and helping each other out, and the bridesmaids were busy tying together the bouquets. I caught the finishing bits of hair and makeup, the dress going on with the help of Becca’s mum and the two maids of honour, the quiet moment before everything kicked off. All the real stuff you can’t stage.
Becca’s dress was stunning — full lace with long lace sleeves that gave her the most incredible silhouette and waist definition. The kind of dress that felt totally in keeping with a castle backdrop!
The ceremony took place in the Ballroom, and with over 130 guests filling those rows of chairs beneath the lancet windows and leaded glass, the room was buzzing with energy. Joe and Becca had a celebrant called Dean from “Not Your Typical Wedding Ceremony” — and she totally delivered. The ceremony felt personal and real. The couple said their own vows (which even made me tear up!), there was a pagan hand-fasting ceremony woven in, and when they shared their first kiss and were pronounced husband and wife, the whole room erupted into celebration.
Walking back up that 75-foot aisle to a wall of applause — that’s one of those Clearwell moments that just can’t be replicated anywhere else.
Whilst the guests were being lined up for confetti, Ella — Clearwell’s wonderful wedding coordinator — whisked Joe and Becca off for a quiet moment together with some canapés and drinks. It’s such a thoughtful touch, and one I always appreciate as a photographer, because it means by the time the couple descends the castle staircase for the confetti moment, they’ve had a chance to breathe and actually take in what just happened.
The confetti shot at Clearwell is one of those things I always look forward to. Joe and Becca had gone for paper confetti — the right call, every time. It catches the spring light, flutters slowly down that long approach, and fills the frame in a way that looks incredible!
From there, the afternoon was all theirs — mingling with guests on the terrace and across the croquet lawn, big hugs from family and friends, group photos and relaxed portraits in the castle grounds. The beautifully landscaped gardens were looking their spring best, with daffodils everywhere, and the stone exterior in that April afternoon light was exactly as good as you’d hope.
Then everyone headed inside for the wedding breakfast — which had a very Joe-and-Becca energy to it: they’d gone for a fish and chips buffet. Brilliant.
The speeches followed — the best woman, the best man, the maid of honour, the bride herself, and the groom all spoke, and every single one landed. As the sun was dropping behind the Forest of Dean treeline, we headed back out into the grounds for some evening portraits. The castle lit up from inside, the leaded windows glowing, the Gothic facade against the fading sky — it was epic!
Then back inside for the cake cut in the Great Hall, followed by the first dance. Joe and Becca also did a photo dash — if you haven’t come across this before, the couple stand in one spot in the Great Hall, an MC gets on the mic, and guests are encouraged to sprint in, grab a quick photo with the couple, and get back out, all to a single song. Absolute chaos, of course, but great fun! And it means the couple ends up with joyful, spontaneous images with almost everyone there.
The first dance itself was fully choreographed and included some genuinely impressive spins — guests were loving it! A few dancing photos in the Cellar Bar, then a final night portrait outside the castle with the castle windows glowing behind them, and I headed home happy.
It was a good day.

Clearwell Castle – FAQs
Have you photographed a lot of weddings at Clearwell Castle?
Yes — it’s I’ve photographed at Clearwell Castle and many surrounding venues, as I am based between Monmouth and Hereford.
I know how the light moves through the Ballroom at different times, which parts of the grounds work best for portraits in different seasons, how the day tends to flow between the ceremony, the drinks reception on the terrace, and the wedding breakfast in the Great Hall.
What photography style works best at Clearwell Castle?
Clearwell suits a natural, documentary approach really well. The venue is so full of character — the Gothic architecture, the leaded windows, the manicured gardens, the Forest of Dean setting — that the best images tend to come from just letting the day happen rather than over-directing everything.
That said, there are a handful of classic Clearwell moments — the confetti shot on the castle steps, portraits on the croquet lawn or in the grounds, the first dance in the Great Hall — where a bit of gentle direction goes a long way.
My style blends both: mostly hands-off storytelling with a few well-timed, relaxed portrait moments.
When’s the best time for portraits at Clearwell Castle?
If the light is cooperating, that window between the ceremony and the wedding breakfast works really well — the afternoon light on the castle exterior and across the manicured gardens is gorgeous. But I’d also strongly recommend building in a bit of time in the early evening for a second portrait moment out in the grounds.
The light gets that warm, golden quality, the formal part of the day has settled, you’ve had a drink and a meal, and you’re much more relaxed.
Those portraits on the lawns with the castle behind you tend to be the ones couples fall in love with.
And if you can squeeze in a night portrait outside the castle before the evening wraps up — do it. The lit-up stone exterior against the dark Forest of Dean sky is stunning.
Do you offer packages for Clearwell Castle weddings?
I don’t do venue-specific packages, but I offer full-day and part-day coverage that works really well with the natural flow of a Clearwell wedding. I also offer significant discounts for mid-week weddings. You’ll find my full pricing here.
