If you’re looking for a strikingly beautiful wedding venue that’s warm and welcoming, Clevedon Hall in North Somerset is a total gem. Just 15 minutes from Bristol and right on the edge of the Bristol Channel, Clevedon Hall is a historic mansion that has striking architecture, beautiful gardens and exclusive use. It’s just a stone’s throw from the beach too!
As a documentary wedding photographer, venues like Clevedon Hall are wonderful places to work. There’s space, light, and lots of l backdrops that you don’t need to over-style. I love it when clients book me to be their Clevedon Hall wedding photographer.
Why Couples Choose Clevedon Hall for Their Wedding
Couples who choose Clevedon Hall often want:
-
A beautiful historic mansion without it feeling stuffy
-
Exclusive use
-
Beautiful gardens for relaxed drinks receptions
-
Coastal Somerset vibes
-
Luxury accommodation on site
-
Flexible indoor and outdoor ceremony options
A Luxury Exclusive-Use Wedding Venue in North Somerset
One of the biggest draws of Clevedon Hall is that it has exclusive use. That means the house, the 17 acres of landscaped gardens, the lake and lawns are all yours. Tucked away from the busy Clevedon seafront (when I was a district nurse, I used to drive past it almost every day and never even knew it was there!), it has a beautiful feel of privacy.
For couples planning a Somerset wedding, this flexibility is a huge win. The day can be moulded to suit you — from a formal black-tie celebration in the Great Hall or something much more chilled, with garden drinks and lawn games overlooking the Bristol Channel.
Clevedon Hall can host up to around 150 guests for your wedding breakfast and up to 250 for evening celebrations.
Ceremony options at Clevedon Hall
Clevedon Hall is licensed for civil ceremonies, and there are several options depending on the feel you’re after.
The Great Hall
Grand and elegant — perfect for couples who want that classic country house ceremony backdrop.
The Library or Orangery
Slightly more intimate spaces, ideal for smaller ceremonies or winter weddings with lots of atmosphere.
Outdoor Gazebo Ceremony
On a sunny day, the outdoor gazebo overlooking the lawns and lake is stunning. You get that beautiful garden setting, with trees and open sky framing you as the subject.
Having both indoor and outdoor options is such a bonus in the UK — you can have a plan A and B and go with the flow with the Great British weather!!
The Gardens and Grounds – A Photographer’s Dream
The 17 acres of grounds at Clevedon Hall are honestly one of its biggest selling points!
There’s a private lake, lawns, terraced steps, trees and thoughtful seasonal planting that changes throughout the year. In spring and summer, everything feels lush and romantic. In autumn, the colours are incredible. Even in winter, the architecture and evergreens make stunning backdrops for photos.
And because you’re so close to the coast, it’s possible to slip off to the beach for photos (especially wonderful at golden hour!). There’s also Clevedon Pier, if you want to go all out on the coastal theme.
Clevedon – A Seaside Somerset Setting
Clevedon itself is a Victorian seaside town with lots of character. It’s known for the beautiful Grade I listed Clevedon Pier, (sometimes!) wild coastal views across the Bristol Channel and epic, ever-changing tidal landscapes.
You’re also within easy reach of:
-
The Mendip Hills
-
North Somerset countryside
-
The Cotswolds (a little further afield)
It’s also perfect for guests travelling from Bristol, Bath, South Wales or further afield via Bristol Airport.

Emily & Matt’s November Wedding at Clevedon Hall
Emily and Matt got married on a chilly November day at Clevedon Hall, and honestly, it was such a good one. I love autumn weddings — the light in November is some of the best in the year, and there’s no expectation for good weather, making any bit of sunshine feel like a huge gift!
Their ceremony took place in the Great Hall. It’s a stunning room, but in winter it doesn’t get loads of natural light, so I used some off-camera flash to gently light everything, and I love the way the photos came out. I always want it to look like the room — just at its absolute best, and when you know how to use it, adding light can make winter weddings so atmospheric.
It was a simple registrar ceremony, no fuss — vows, rings, done. But when they were pronounced husband and wife, the room just exploded. Proper cheering, clapping, and some happy tears! Their first kiss was met with absolute chaos (and you could feel how loved they are).
Sunshine, Confetti & A Dash Back Inside
Once the register was signed, Emily and Matt really wanted confetti — and thankfully the November weather played ball! It was cold, but it was sunny, so everyone lined up outside one of Clevedon Hall’s gorgeous doorways along the path, and when the doors opened, they were absolutely showered in confetti. So much hugging, kissing, laughing. It was one of those really joyful, slightly chaotic moments that I love to capture!
But it was chilly. So after a few minutes of celebrating, everyone headed back inside for drinks and canapes.
Group Photos & Portraits
We kept the group photos really smooth and efficient. One of the great things about Clevedon Hall is that you can stay close to the house, which means guests could stay inside in the warm until I called them out for their photo. No one freezing for the sake of it!
After that, Emily and Matt were really up for heading out for some portraits. The autumn colours around the grounds were absolutely lush, and the house looked incredible in that beautiful November light, such a treat to photograph!
They’re such funny people. Honestly, half the time they were just messing around and making each other laugh. And I love that. I always want photos to reflect who a couple actually are. If you’re not into loads of PDA, I’m not going to make you pretend to be. If you’re super affectionate, we’ll lean into that. If your relationship is built on humour and taking the mick out of each other — that’s what your photos should show.
Emily and Matt’s portraits are full of laughter because that’s just who they are 🙂
Orangery Wedding Breakfast & Evening Speeches
It wasn’t long before everyone was seated in the Orangery for their three-course meal. I captured them being announced in again (with lots more cheering!), and then they were treated to a relaxed dinner with their favourite people.
By the time speeches came around, it was properly dark outside. So I set up some off-camera flashes again to make sure I could capture everything properly — the speakers, the top table, and all the guest reactions. I always want those moments to feel warm and natural, even if technically there’s a bit of lighting magic going on behind the scenes (which is always needed at that time of year!).
The First Dance From Every Angle
In the evening, the DJ set up the dance floor back in the Great Hall, and once Emily and Matt took to the floor for their first dance, things got really fun!
I used more off-camera flash so I could shoot at their level and get that energy on the dance floor. Then I legged it upstairs, leaned over the balcony and grabbed some shots from above — which looked incredible!
It wasn’t long before everyone piled onto the dance floor, and the moves got increasingly questionable!! There was so much hilarity. I love that part of the evening — when people properly let go, these are often the best guest photos.
Brave Night Portraits in the Cold
Before I left, I had one more idea.
One of the perks of not getting married in peak summer is that you get darkness early — which means we can create some really cool night portraits. Clevedon Hall was lit up beautifully from the outside, so I set up a couple of lights and called Emily and Matt out for just a few minutes.
It was properly chilly!!
I lit them with my flashes, and the hall’s own lighting lit up the building behind them. The ephotos were awesome, and well worth a chilly 5 minutes for Emily and Matt!

Documentary Photography at Clevedon Hall
As a documentary wedding photographer, what I love most about Clevedon Hall is the way the day can just flow. There’s space for guests to spread out, lots of natural light, and plenty of quiet corners for natural, unposed moments to unfold.
With so many different spaces and rooms, there is a huge variety at Clevedon Hall. If it rains, there are so many wonderful backdrops just inside the house, and if the weather is fine, we really are spoilt for choice!
If you’re planning a Clevedon Hall wedding and want photography that captures the real moments, the atmosphere and all those in-between bits you’ll treasure later, it’s a venue that works beautifully with a relaxed, documentary approach.
The History behind Clevedon Hall
Clevedon Hall was built between 1850–1852 for Conrad William Finzel, a wealthy Bristol sugar merchant. Originally called Frankfort Hall, the house was designed in a Jacobean Revival style by architects Foster and Wood.
The estate is Grade II listed, and several features within the grounds — including the boundary walls, lodge and fountain — are also listed. Over the years, the house has had many different lives.
From 1945 until 1991 it was home to St Brandon’s Girls’ School, then, it was used as office space before undergoing a significant restoration in 2010 to become the luxury wedding venue it is today.
