The History of Malvern, a Worcestershire Town

Malvern’s history is closely linked to its rise as a Victorian spa town in Worcestershire. During the 19th century, visitors flocked to Malvern to “take the waters,” (the natural spring water that flows from the Malvern Hills). The beautiful architecture present today (grand hotels and refined villas) is a stark reminder of that prosperous period, when Malvern became a fashionable retreat known for health, wellbeing and fresh air.

Great Malvern Priory sits in the heart of the town, with origins stretching back to the 11th century, anchoring Malvern’s much older monastic past. The Winter Gardens and Malvern Theatres are a nod to the town’s longstanding cultural tradition, while the hillside setting gives the streets a beautiful sense of being held by nature (and are a wonderful place to walk too!).

The Malvern Hills run alongside the town — an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There is a network of springs, walking routes and panoramic viewpoints all within walking distance of the town centre.

As a Malvern wedding photographer based in Herefordshire, what I love about working here is the variety of backdrops to choose from. The Victorian architecture and hillside streets sit in beautiful contrast to the wild, open landscape of the Malvern Hills behind them. The short distance between make it an easy transition for couples on their wedding day who want a variety of shots.

Ludlow’s Fascinating History

Ludlow’s history stretches back over a thousand years. Originally known by the Saxon names Leadlowe and Ludlowe — and even earlier as Diman — the town developed into a medieval walled settlement in the 11th century following the Norman Conquest. Its strategic position near the Welsh border made it an important centre of power, with Ludlow Castle becoming one of the most significant fortresses in the region.

Through the medieval and Tudor periods, Ludlow was a cultural and administrative hub. The town’s distinctive half-timbered buildings reflect this history still today. Landmarks such as St Laurence’s Church, often described as one of the finest parish churches in England, and the 12th-century Horseshoe Weir remind us of centuries of craftsmanship and community life.

The Buttercross and Castle Square became focal points for trade and gathering, reinforcing Ludlow as a thriving market town.

As a Ludlow wedding photographer, what makes this town so rewarding to photograph is the huge variety of backdrops within walking distance. The medieval streets and Tudor façades are beautiful backdrops, and green spaces near the rivers Corve and Teme are fabulous for couples wanting nature in their pictures. Within a short walk, you can move from Ludlow Castle to Dinham Bridge or the more lively atmosphere of the Market at Castle Square.

For couples who love nature, nearby Mortimer Forest and Clee Hill are great spots for photographs. I can place you in a beautiful sweeping landscape of the surrounding Shropshire countryside. Ludlow has an incredible mix of historic architecture and beautiful, surrounding countryside.

Beautiful Photography in West Wales

Having grown up in a very rural community, my friends and I all learnt to drive almost as soon as we turned 17 and would spend our weekends driving down into Pembrokeshire, where we enjoyed more pretty Welsh seaside towns such as Tenby, Narberth, Fishguard and Saundersfoot. With my new found freedom, it wasn’t long before I felt called to take up surfing and would spend my free time in the waves at Broad Haven, Newgale and Freshwater West.

As a teenager, I worked at The Ship Inn, Tresaith and used to enjoy taking a stroll along to Aberporth during my break.

After completing school, I worked at Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth. On my days off, I would walk the wild Welsh coastal path with my dog and watch for wildlife. I have always loved the outdoors and was captivated by the National Botanic Garden of Wales, near Llanelli.

In the summertime, the population of West Wales swells, and we locals would always complain about how the tourists struggled to drive our tiny, windy roads! Of course, the Welsh Wales holidaymakers provided lots of jobs for locals and were vitally important for local businesses and heritage sites across Wales.

My husband and I got engaged on St David’s beach after a road trip through Pembrokeshire enjoying Newquay and Laugharne along the way.

A festival wedding calls for an outdoor venue. Consider:

• Fields or Gardens: Perfect for rustic and boho aesthetics.
• Woodland: Adds an intimate and magical touch.
• Beaches or Lakesides: Great for a laid-back, coastal vibe.
• Farms: Perfect for laid-back countryside feel

Ensure the venue has enough space for multiple zones, such as a ceremony area, food and drink stations, live music, and chill-out spots. Check for access to essentials like electricity, water, and toilets—or be ready to rent portable facilities (you can hire some pretty fancy portaloos these days!).

• Food Trucks: Nothing says festival like a food truck and there are SO MANY awesome food trucks around.

10 Awesome Wedding Venues in and around Bristol 

Leigh Court

Leigh Court Country Mansion sits in the heart of Brisol’s iconic Leigh Woods and is just a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of Bristol City Centre.

With the option to get married in the Great Hall or host a marquee wedding celebration in the extensive lawns, there is plenty of choice to host the wedding day of your dreams.

Leigh court has 27 acres of private parkland to roam, plenty of photo opportunities for you and your wedding guests!

The Square Club, Berkeley Square Hotel

Situated just off Bristol’s famous Park Street and The Triangle, The Square Club is a quirky, edgy city centre venue and one of my absolute favourites!

Have group photos on the steps outside or in the park in the centre of Berkeley Square. Head up to Brandon Hill Park for portraits with an epic Bristol backdrop or get your wedding car to drive you through Bristol for photos in front of Clifton Suspension Bridge like my clients Jenny and Jason.

Clevedon Hall

15 minutes drive out of Bristol you’ll find the pretty seaside town that is Clevedon. With it’s eye-catching Victorian Pier and views over the Severn Estuary it is a wonderful place to tie the knot.

Clevedon Hall is a manor house wedding venue tucked away just behind Clevedon’s pretty waterfront, with gardens aplenty, deer and even it’s own lake there are photo opportunities galore.

Coombe Lodge

Perhaps one of the most impressive Bristol edding venues is Coombe Lodge. Set in impressive landscaped grounds, Coombe Lodge never fails to impress as it reveals itself from the long driveway approach.

The unassuming village that is Blagdon is one of my favourite places to visit in North Somerset and Coombe Lodge’s impressive views over Blagdon Lake really do pack a punch.

Folly Farm Centre

The Folly Farm Centre is owned by the Avon Wildlife Trust and prides itself on being a sustainable, eco-friendly wedding venue. With 250 acres of beautiful nature reserve to explore it is perfect for the outdoorsy, eco-conscious bride and groom.

With views across Chew Valley and the Mendip Hills and a relaxed, informal vibe, this wedding venue encompasses everything I love about Bristol and the surrounding area. 

Arnos Vale

Perhaps one of the coolest and most suprising wedding venues in Bristol city is Arnos Vale Cemetry Trust. it has 45 acres of woodland and green space right in the heart of Bristol and is a wonderful venue for those looking for a less traiditonal wedding.

You’ll have the choice of three places to get married including the Underwood Centre, the Spielman Centre or the Anglican Chapel and the absolute best thing is that it is a dog-friendly wedding venue, yay!

Aldwick Estate

This gorgeous wedding venue is set in the heart of a beautiful vineyard estate not far from Bristol Airport.

With two rustic stone barns and far-reaching views over the vineyards and the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty this venue is perfect for couples looking for a countryside venue not too far from Bristol.

The Manor at Old Down Estate

In the North west of Bristol in the pretty village of Tockington, South Gloucestershire is the renovated Manor at Old Down Estate. Set in 66 acres of South-West countryside, Manor House has epic views over the River Severn and into the rolling hills of Wales.

Engaged couples can choose to get married in either the Manor House itself or the converted barn on the country estate.

The Forge

This historic industrial place was built in the 1800s and has been recently renovated respectfully to it’s past with exposed brickwork and cast iron beams. 

Just 10 minutes from Corn Street’s registry office you’ll head up Bristol’s quirky Christmas Steps to find this unique and intimate wedding venue.

With beautiful natural light flooding in from  the wall-to-ceiling windows and epic views over Bristol’s city centre this is an awesome alternative wedding venue for smaller weddings.

Paintworks

Another awesome and quirky Bristol wedding venue is the Paintworks. This industrial space is available to hire for wedding celebrations and is essentially a blank canvas – fantastic for creating your own individual wedding day style.

Set in the heart of South Bristol alongisde the river Avon and just around the corner from Bristol Temple Meads this well-connected city venue is perfect for couples looking to get creative to make their own individual wedding day vibe.
