Treadam Barn is beautifully hidden in the Monmouthshire countryside, a short drive from Abergavenny, and not far from the striking Skirrid and Sugar Loaf mountains. It’s a beautiful barn, with an interesting history that the owner is sure to tell you all about! It’s unusual in that there are big windows and, therefore, tons of natural light, making it very rare for a barn wedding venue. 

Everything is on one site, which makes it super easy for couples – no rushing between venues or complicated logistics. Couples and their guests can enjoy a relaxed, happy day, and there is even a pool on site if the weather’s hot!

For photography, a relaxed setup means more authentic interactions, more time for fun, and more of those small in-between moments that are so much more meaningful than anything staged.

The main barn is actually beautiful for your ceremony, because it is flooded with light and a dream for a photographer who tries to avoid using flash when possible. The stone walls and wooden beams are truly beautiful, and the barn really needs little decorating.

You can also plan an outdoor ceremony in the courtyard or surrounding grounds (weather permitting). The scenery is beautiful, especially in the summer.

One of the biggest draws of Clevedon Hall is that it has exclusive use. That means the house, the 17 acres of landscaped gardens, the lake and lawns are all yours. Tucked away from the busy Clevedon seafront (when I was a district nurse, I used to drive past it almost every day and never even knew it was there!), it has a beautiful feel of privacy.

As a documentary wedding photographer, what I love most about Clevedon Hall is the way the day can just flow. There’s space for guests to spread out, lots of natural light, and plenty of quiet corners for natural, unposed moments to unfold.

With so many different spaces and rooms, there is a huge variety at Clevedon Hall. If it rains, there are so many wonderful backdrops just inside the house, and if the weather is fine, we really are spoilt for choice!

The History behind Clevedon Hall

Clevedon Hall was built between 1850–1852 for Conrad William Finzel, a wealthy Bristol sugar merchant. Originally called Frankfort Hall, the house was designed in a Jacobean Revival style by architects Foster and Wood. 

The estate is Grade II listed, and several features within the grounds — including the boundary walls, lodge and fountain — are also listed. Over the years, the house has had many different lives.

From 1945 until 1991 it was home to St Brandon’s Girls’ School, then, it was used as office space before undergoing a significant restoration in 2010 to become the luxury wedding venue it is today.

Clifton Observatory is one of the most iconic places for wedding photographs in Bristol. The suspension bridge is a stunning backdrop with a ton of wow factor! For couples wanting something truly unique, there’s also the option of using the Giant’s Cave viewing platform for a dramatic, cliffside moment.

Drinks Reception and Photos

The rooftop terrace has 360° views across Bristol, and is ideal for post-ceremony drinks and relaxed mingling. On a nice day, it’s hard to beat.

The William West Room can be used for a seated meal or evening reception, with space for dining, speeches and dancing depending on your numbers.

There’s a licensed bar at the observatory. As always, it’s worth checking what’s included in your package — furniture, glassware, staffing and AV equipment — so you can budget clearly from the start.

There are a few practicalities to consider when booking Clifton Observatory. There’s no on-site parking, so guests will need to use buses or taxis, which are frequent from all over Bristol. Some areas, including the rooftop and cave, have steps and may not be fully accessible, so it’s worth considering what accessibility needs your guests might have.

Weather is another consideration if you’re planning to use the terrace — always have a backup plan in place. The events team are experienced and can guide you through timings, layout options and any local restrictions, including noise levels in the evening.

Do you photograph lots of weddings here?

Yes! Although I’m based in Herefordshire, I used to live in Bristol and still work there all the time. I also shoot lots of micro-weddings, and the Observatory is a popular choice for those!

What should we think about when it comes to photos at the Observatory?
The main thing is the weather and the tourists! It’s a fairly exposed venue, so worth having some bad-weather contingency plans for photos. 

There are always lots of tourists (and locals!) up at the Observatory, so we might need to wait a little for the best spots for your portraits, but that’s ok! It works fine and is worth the effort because those views are incredible!

When is the best time for portraits?

Clifton Observatory gets a wonderful golden hour, and sometimes couples getting married elsewhere in Bristol choose to slip off to the Observatory for iconic Bristol wedding photos at this time. Golden hour is the hour before sunset, and this changes with the seasons.

Alice and Alex’s Wye Valley Micro-Wedding

The Wye Valley is a truly beautiful place, especially for nature lovers, and is an ideal location for a wedding. My natural, informal style and work inspired by nature make me a good fit for couples seeking a Wye Valley wedding photographer.

I’m always thrilled when a couple book me to be their Peterstone Court Wedding Photographer. Relaxed How Caple Court Wedding Photographer in Herefordshire

A Real Wedding at How Caple Court

A Rainy Morning in Hoarwithy

I absolutely loved photographing Will and Rebecca’s wedding at How Caple Court. Their day started in the little village of Hoarwithy, where Rebecca got ready at home surrounded by her bridesmaids and family. It was one of those properly rainy mornings where the weather had its own plans, so her idea of walking to the church quickly turned into a lift instead. Hoarwithy church is beautiful, but reached by a long stretch of steep steps, and in the rain, they definitely became part of the adventure!  One guest even took a gentle tumble on the way up (thankfully unharmed), which brought a lot of laughter and instantly set a relaxed, joyful atmosphere for the day.

Confetti, Dogs and the Journey to How Caple Court

The ceremony itself was led by a wonderfully warm vicar who made everyone feel welcome and created such a calm, personal vibe. When Will and Rebecca walked back down the church steps as newlyweds, their guests formed a confetti tunnel in the rain. It was chaotic — umbrellas everywhere, slippery stone underfoot, and a lot of laughter!

Afterwards, their gorgeous ginger cocker spaniel, Rum, joined us outside the church for photos. She looked uncannily like my own dog, Ted, so it was extra cute to capture her! We captured a few relaxed portraits with their vintage Land Rover wedding car before heading along the windy Herefordshire lanes to How Caple Court.

Hilariously, a farmer decided at that moment to move some stock, and so there ended up being a large traffic jam of wedding guests, and we all arrived in one big convoy at the venue!

How Caple Court is a truly amazing wedding venue for a Herefordshire wedding photographer. The gardens and historic buildings offer so many beautiful backdrops, a real treat for a photographer who loves nature as much as me! During the drinks reception, we took family group photos and wandered through the gardens for portraits, making the most of a gap in the weather. Peacocks roam freely around the grounds, which adds such a quirky charm to the place (though it does mean you need to watch your step, especially when wearing a white dress!). The speeches were informal and heartfelt in the panelled Convert Barn, and the couple cut a Colin the Caterpillar cake before guests settled in for dinner. As evening guests arrived, the atmosphere shifted into celebration mode, and the dance floor quickly filled — an awesome end to a truly amazing day!

A real wedding at Owlpen Manor

Georgina and Ben wanted an informal, fun day and wanted to enjoy the stunning scenery that Owlpen had to offer.

They tied the knot in the summer and planned to have a drinks reception in the formal gardens. Halfway through though, the Great British weather had other ideas! It started to pour with rain, but fortunately, there is lots of stunning indoor space, so it didn’t matter one bit! 

Despite an inconvenient downpour, the sun soon came back out again and guests were able to enjoy the stunning Gloucestershire countryside that Owlpen has to offer.

Owlpen Manor: a stunning backfrop for photographs

Owlpen Manor is a historic estate with origins dating back to the early medieval period. The site has been occupied since at least the 9th century, with the current manor house built during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The manor is named after the Saxon thegn “Olla” and the nearby spring, or “pen.” The Daunt family acquired the estate in the 1400s, and they were responsible for many of the Tudor-style enhancements that are still visible today.

In the 18th century, the manor passed to the Stoughton family, who made minimal alterations, which helped preserve its medieval and Tudor character through the centuries. However, by the late 19th century, Owlpen Manor fell into a state of decline, typical of many old English country houses during that period. It was revived in the early 20th century by architect Norman Jewson, a key figure in the Arts and Crafts movement.

A Celebration at Leyfold Events

The drinks reception for under way and after time to mingle with their friends, it was time to take some family photos and sneak the couple away for their portraits.

Dinner was served in the main Leyfold Events Yurt which had been beautifully decorated. Speeches were delivered between courses before guests headed back outside to enjoy the setting sun.

The newlyweds and I headed across some fields behind the venue for some stunning golden hour shots. 

By now, the Yurt had been cleared for dancing and as the couple took to the dancefloor, guests gathered around to watch and cheer, before joining the couple to get the party started.

A relaxed celebration in the Cotswolds

A three-course meal was served in the main Barn, and speeches were delivered. Lizzie had lost her dad a short while before the wedding, which made it extra emotional. Wonderful tributes were given to her late father, who was beautifully honoured.

Once the cake was cut, guests headed back out into the Barn at Upcote’s courtyard for more drinks and games before the first dance took place in one of the smaller barns. 

As the sun began to set, Lizzie, Mike and I headed up to The Barn at Upcote’s drive where we took a stroll and captured some truly stunning golden hour photographs.

A Day at Bredenbury Court Barns

The Ceremony took place in the Orangery, a beautiful, light-flooded ceremony room with views over the Malvern Hills.

Being a chilly December day, the drinks reception took place in the bar, but the couple were happy to head outside for some bridal portraits, given that the weather was dry.

Once guests were seated in the Oak Barn, the couple were announced into the room as husband and wife and their loved ones clapped and cheered. The Father of the Bride, Groom and Best Man all delivered speeches, and Simon announced their pregnancy, which was celebrated wildly by the guests.
