Becky and Matt’s Engagement Shoot at St Audries Park,
Exmoor

When Becky and Matt asked me if they could bring their little dog Rolo along on their pre-wedding shoot I was over the moon! I knew Rolo wasn’t very old so was excited to chat all things Puppy with them having recently got our cocker spaniel puppy Ted.

I have to say, at the time Rolo seemed like a dream by comparison to my excitable cocker spaniel puppy, she was impeccably well behaved – even when we marched through a field of wheat 4 times her height!

At the time, Becky and Matt were super busy planning their St Audries Park wedding. Becky was about to go away to Edinburgh for a whole month and they were working through their wedding to do-list before she went away.

We met up at their venue, St Andries Park, took a few shots and then headed down to St Audries Bay to let Rolo stretch her legs.

St Audries Park has been voted the Best British Coastal Venue in 2019 by The British Wedding Awards, set in stunning parkland, surrounded by farmland and just a short trip from the North Somerset coast as well as rugged National Park of Exmoor, I can totally see why.

Why I love an Exmoor pre-wedding shoot

Exmoor‘s unique landscape makes it the perfect backdrop for a pretty cool engagement shoot. From it’s wild, windswept moorlands and breathtaking sea-views, to it’s ancient woodlands and craggy valleys. I absolutely love heading out on an adventure with clients in search of epic backdrops and beautiful light.  There’s so much to do on Exmoor too, why not take a midnight walk with the one you love, you could go star gazing in some of the darkest skies in the UK. You could take a horse ride, feel the wind in your hair as you gallop across moorland with views of the sea up ahead. If you’re looking for a lazier afternoon why not take a picnic and head out fishing in the beautifully clear waters of Exmoor’s streams and rivers, or if you’re after a wilder water experience hire a canoe and go out in search of rapids!

There’s always an adventure to find in this beautiful natural park, making it one of my favourite places to head out on a pre-wedding shoot.

Luke and Corina’s Just Us Shoot

Canonteign Falls Engagement Photographer

I met Luke and Corina at a wedding fayre back in October the year before their wedding, they tentatively booked my wedding package including a Just Us Engagement shoot but I knew they were a little apprehensive about it, as most of my clients are.

Canonteign Falls is one of my favourite places to shoot! Nestled in the Teign valley on Dartmoor it is one of the most chilled out, rustic venues with lots of gorgeous outdoor space, trees, lakes and of course the waterfalls. The Wedding Coordinator Lianne is amazing and also very relaxed. It’s a great place to get married if you’re looking for an informal wedding venue near Exeter.

I met Luke and Corina at Canonteign Falls because their wedding was being held there later that summer. Being a very chilled-out couple it was the perfect spot for both their wedding and their Just Us shoot.

I knew that neither Luke or Corina were wild about the idea of being in front of the camera. But my laid-back approach mirrored theirs and with a little gentle direction they smashed it in front of the camera. I’ll never forget the moment Corina’s sighed “Wow, is that it?! That wasn’t so bad” when I told them we’d finished.

Whilst I passionately believe that a pre-wedding practice in front of the camera is a great shout, my approach is always super relaxed and informal. My main objective is actually getting to know you both before your big day, make you laugh a little and get you to realise that just because you aren’t a model, doesn’t mean you can’t look awesome in photographs.

My clients who book a Just Us Engagement shoot always give me the same feedback; it was so worth it! Despite the nerves.

Jenny and Mike’s Engagement Shoot

Looe, Cornwall

Jenny and Mike booked me as their Cornwall engagement photographer when I met Jenny at Bride the Wedding Show at Exeter’s Westpoint last year. The pair had decided they wanted their shoot at a place that meant something to them, so they settled on the Cornish coastal village of Looe, where Mike used to holiday as a child, and where they go to celebrate the new year.

Because Looe is east facing, I tentatively suggested a sunrise shoot, in the hope we might catch some gorgeous morning light. The problem was, this meant a 6am meet up. Anyone who knows me will know I’m not a morning person (it’s a bit of a joke in my family, avoid talking to Becky until she’s been awake for at least an hour!), but for Jenny and Mike this actually meant a 3am start! I could hardly believe it when they enthusiastically agreed, but actually it was perfect, because aside from a few local fishermen, we were the only ones about.

We started at the harbour with some silhouette shots of the pair against a sunrise sky, before heading up the coastal path towards Talland Bay. Despite a little rain, we had a fab time getting to know each other a little better.

Mike told me all about his almost disastrous proposal – he’d arranged exclusive access to the aquarium where they’d had their first date. He was halfway through the proposal when a security alarm started going off, for what felt like forever! Of course, Jenny didn’t care and the rest, as they say, is history.

Jenny and Mike are tying the knot at Upton Barn this autumn and having got to know them a little better on their Just Us engagement shoot, I really can’t wait to be a part of their special day.

Jack and Laura’s Just Us
Dartmoor Engagement Photographer

It was a beautiful May evening when I met up with Laura and Jack for their Engagement Shoot at Fingle Bridge and Castle Drogo in Dartmoor, Devon.

This lovely couple booked me to be their Dartmoor Wedding Photographer back when I first met them in October at a Wedding Show in Exeter. Like me, Laura grew up on a farm, so their wedding will take place on the family farm in June.

With only a few weeks to go, there’s still a little work to be done on the farm to get it looking less agricultural and more matrimonial, but I was super excited to hear all about their plans for the big day!

We were totally blessed with some glorious Dartmoor views, a beautiful sunset and were even joined for a short while by some adorable Dartmoor ponies!

Feeling a little nervous in front of the camera at first, after a bit of a chat and a giggle about farmers notorious time-keeping, Jack and Laura soon relaxed into it and we got some truly stunning photographs. Here’s a few of my favourites…

Why I love Dartmoor

There’s nothing quite like getting short of breath as you take a hike up the rugged moorland of Dartmoor. With rewarding views over Devon and Cornwall, the climb up Haytor is one of my absolute favourites, followed of course, by a trip to a cosy, country pub!

I’d never been to Fingle Glen before my shoot with Jack and Laura but when I arrived I was warmly greeted by a friendly, cosy pub and a humpback bridge that looked like it had come straight out of Hobbiton

. There was a carpet of bluebells lining the floor as we climbed up through the woodland. After a final steep climb up, we were treated with epic views over this incredible county, a gorgeous sunset and of course, grazing Dartmoor ponies.

With it’s rugged, varied landscape, it’s unpredictable weather and it’s jaw-dropping views, Dartmoor is one of my absolute favourite places to shoot.

Lauren and Phil’s
Dartmoor Engagement Shoot

This was my first engagement shoot of the 2019 season and WOW did it blow my mind! Lauren, Phil and I took a hike up Dartmoor one Sunday morning in late February – we were blessed with beautiful light, weather that decided to behave, and outstanding views across the beautiful Devonshire moors.

As I spend a lot of my free time hiking up hills or mountains in search of epic views, I love nothing more than heading off on an adventure with my clients in search of jaw-dropping backdrops and beautiful light. Dartmoor has so much to variety to offer from forestry that feels like you’re lost in the wilderness to dramatic and ever changing skyscapes. I am incredibly inspired by this area of outstanding natural beauty and shooting out in the wilds is my favourite way to spend a few hours.

Like most couples, Lauren and Phil were a little apprehensive about having their photographs taken. After a few bad jokes from myself and a little gentle direction these two quickly learnt to focus on each other and forget I was there. I love nothing more than capturing the natural connection between newly-engaged couples and the love between these two is palpable.

The time leading up to your wedding is one of the most precious, happy times of your lives. I truly believe you should invest in capturing memories of that wonderful time. Afterwards we’d finished, Lauren, Phil and I went for lunch in a local cafe and had a good old natter about all their wedding plans.

I met Becci and Dai at Margam Park for their South Wales Engagement Shoot. It was a beautiful, crisp, autumnal afternoon and we were lucky enough to get some gorgeous, golden light before the sun set.

Becci and Dai are getting married in West Wales at Rhos Y Gilwen Wedding Venue next April and although their photographs mean a lot to them, like most couples I meet, they were a bit apprehensive about being photographed.

They decided to book an engagement shoot after a chat about how useful this can be for couples who feel a little anxious in front of the camera.

Margam Park is a beautiful, big country park in South Wales, just off the M4. It has acres of woodland, as well as the old Margam Castle and the Orangery Wedding Venue. It has the remains of an old monastery, beautiful archways and Margam Abbey. A perfect site for a romantic, autumnal engagement shoot!

The autumn colours were out in force and mixed with the beautiful golden light of late afternoon we managed to get some really beautiful shots.

It was lovely to catch up with these two before their wedding, they are such a fantastic couple and I can’t wait to see them again in April!

I think Becci and Dai enjoyed their engagement shoot. Despite a bit of pre-shoot nerves, I quickly helped them relax and they seemed pretty pleased with the results too!

Most people feel apprehensive about getting their photos taken but we all want pictures of us on our wedding day looking beautiful, happy and relaxed. Having a pre-wedding shoot is a great way to ensure this happens.

Firstly, an engagement shoot gives us a great chance to get to know each other and gives you the chance to start feeling relaxed with me and in front of my camera. I can get to know your personalities and you can get to know mine. I want it to feel like I’m an old friend when I turn up on the morning of your wedding, not a stranger with a big scary camera in your face!

An engagement shoot is often a lot more relaxed than the shots we’ll take at your wedding because it’ll just be me and the two of you (and the dog, if you fancy!). We’ll have more time to chat and try out different things. Whilst I really value beautiful, natural portraiture in your wedding attire, I don’t like to take up too much of your precious time on your wedding day getting these shots, so a pre-wed shoot let’s us work out what works for you before the wedding and generally makes things a little smoother on the day.

Most people really enjoy their engagement shoot and say it’s a lot of fun. It’s a great chance to get some beautiful photos of the two of you, madly in love, happy and relaxed in a setting that says “this is us”. It also provides an opportunity to capture some memories of one of the happiest times of your lives.
